Interior Painting Costs

Cost ranges:

  • Small interiors (2,000 sq ft): $4,000 to $6,000
  • Medium (2,000–4,000 sq ft): $5,000 to $7,000
  • Larger jobs: prices increase depending on size and complexity

Intro

Hey guys, Derek with Dependable Painting and Remodeling here.

I wanted to hop on and make another video about pricing — this time, we're talking about interior painting.

Factors Influencing Interior Painting Costs

When it comes to interior painting, several factors significantly influence the cost of the job.

Similar to exterior projects, when we do an estimate, the main considerations are size and scope.

I always tell my customers there's no secret formula; it ultimately comes down to time and materials.

But to determine that, we rely on measurement and experience — how much we can produce in a day and how much materials are needed.

First, we look at the size of what we're painting:

  • What’s the size of the home?
  • When we measure, we take into account the length, width, and height of each room to get the volume, which helps us estimate wall square footage.

Next, we consider what’s being painted:

  • Are we painting just the walls?
  • Walls and trim?
  • Or walls, trim, and ceilings?

We also assess the condition of the walls:

  • Are there many repairs?
  • Are they minor, like nail holes and scuff marks?
  • Or do they need bigger patches, like holes about the size of a baseball that require drywall repair?

Logistics come into play as well:

  • How much flooring needs protection?
  • How much furniture must be moved or covered?
  • What prep work is necessary before painting (covering floors and furniture)?

When it comes to woodwork, just like on the exterior, we assess:

  • How much scraping, sanding, spot priming, and caulking is needed?
  • What's the condition of the wood initially?

Room shape and details matter, too:

  • Is there crown molding, chair railing, wainscoting, or just plain walls?
  • Is it a kitchen or bathroom with tricky angles, backsplashes, cabinets, tubs, or showers?

All these factors help give a general picture of the scope.

Budgeting tip:

A good rule of thumb for a ballpark figure is around $3 per square foot of floor space.

For example, a 2,000 sq ft interior would be roughly $6,000 for walls and some trim, assuming normal conditions and finishes.

We always specify high-end, fully washable paint because the quality of paint matters. Many new construction homes use cheap paint that doesn’t wash or touch up well, and often don’t even include primer, resulting in chalky, unfinished-looking walls that are hard to clean — which isn’t acceptable for us. We use durable, washable finishes that are easy to touch up and blend seamlessly.

What does value mean to us?

It’s not about spending a lot but doing a job that lasts and looks great — so you only need to repaint if you want a new color, not because the paint failed.

As an example, I just had my seventh kid, and I can scrub our walls with almost a Brillo pad — that’s the durability we aim for.

Remember, factors like ceiling height, wall condition, color changes, involvement of walls/trim/ceilings, furniture, and floor coverings all influence the final price.
