Should Flooring Be The Same Throughout The House

One of the most common questions from homeowners when picking out flooring is “Should flooring be the same throughout the house?”

There can be many different answers to this question, but it boils down to the design of your home, your taste, and your style. However, it is not unusual to have different flooring throughout your home.

Many people choose to create contrast throughout their house, while other people simply can not afford to use the same flooring throughout the house.

Picture this, you have a dream kitchen that has hardwood floors, but you prefer carpet in the bedroom for comfort. Every room has its own function and purpose, so it makes complete sense that some rooms will have different flooring.

Where Do I Begin?

Step one is to think about which room you want to update.

Where do you spend most of your time?

Is it your master bedroom, living room, or kitchen? Which room is going to make the biggest difference to your day-to-day lifestyle? Is it your hallways that need to be updated?

The professionals say to stay at home and work outward. This has great benefits! Therefore, it is the best idea to start with a bedroom, entryway, or living room. Somewhere that you can create more comfort. Many flooring choices can create comfort.

Now that we have a game plan and your ideas are in line, lets look at the factors that play into flooring options

Factors That Play Into Flooring Options:

Tile and Wood Flooring

What is the style of your home like?

Is it an open floorplan with lots of windows? Does each room have a different purpose and personality?

If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then you are going to be better off choosing a different type of flooring throughout each room.

If the answer is no, then you have the ability to choose one type of flooring that will create unity in your home. With that being said, there is still the option to mix and match colors and textures while still using the same type of flooring, ie hardwood flooring. All homes are different and there is always a solution!

Now that we know the style of your home, what is your budget, or how much money am I willing to spend?

If you are planning to use hardwood floors throughout every room, it is going to add up. Try considering wood that will be beneficial in each room. Whether it be a high-traffic room or bedrooms that do not get a lot of wear and tear or a place where a scratch is not going to happen.

There are a lot of things that can change the direction of what flooring material you decide to pick.

The next question you need to ask yourself is “What are my priorities?” Are your priorities simple so that you will coordinate throughout the whole house and match your aesthetic? What results am I looking for?

With your priorities in line, you need to consider the flow of traffic. Here are some rooms that are considered high traffic and you may need to take into consideration the material, durability, thickness, maintenance, and if the material is safe for small children and pets if applicable. The rooms that are high-traffic areas are bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens.

Finally, we can talk about

Flooring Options:

Hardwood Flooring: This choice is long-lasting and attractive but can cost a pretty penny when it is all said and done. Hardwood may work well in common areas, but it is the smartest choice for rooms that have moisture.

Even though other wood floorings can handle spills, if hardwood flooring gets too wet for too long or if it floods, it will start to warp and/or develop mold. Since hardwood flooring is pricey, maybe consider placing it in a room that has low traffic and wear and tear, like a private area. Bedrooms or studies are great places for wood floors.

Carpet:

Tile and Wood Flooring

Carpet creates a sense of warmth and comfort. However, the carpet does have a downside; it traps dust and dirt. With that being said, carpeting bedrooms may not be the best option for a bedroom or living room, but can be a great option for a study room or a book room!

Carpets come in many different designs and there is a variety of choices and textures. Don’t let the variety of carpets deter you from your project desires.

Tiles:

You definitely want to consider tile flooring as opposed to wood. It is good to have options. Tile is an extremely durable option, while hardwood can get scratched over time.

Tile can last for decades and is more resistant to damage. With that being said, tiles can go forever without needing significant repairs, which makes them the best in quality. This is a great option for bathrooms and kitchens because it is easier to clean and protects a surface that is exposed to water.

A bathroom is a place where water is prominent, so it makes sense that a bathroom will have tile or vinyl as opposed to carpet or hardwood.

Now that we have discussed flooring materials, your space, and where you need to begin. We are going to answer the biggest question, “Should The Flooring Be The Same Throughout The House?”

Pros of Having One Flooring Throughout Your Home:

Consistency: This is a benefit because it keeps your house cohesive and consistent. It is good if you have an open floor plan where your living room, dining room, and kitchen are one big room. By using the same floor in these areas, you can create a unified look in your home. Having the same flooring from room to room will allow you to extend unity throughout your home. Using one flooring type can have advantages when it comes to appearance and installation.

Cons of Having One Flooring Throughout Your Home:

Sometimes, having one type of flooring throughout your home does not always work with all decorating styles.

If you have a very creative style and want to get creative, using different flooring can help bring your creativity to life. Your wants and needs can vary during this time and you should always keep your creative side in mind!

You can transition between different styles and types of flooring (marble, laminate, etc) throughout your home. This will give you the opportunity to use any decor you choose.

Choosing The Best Flooring For You!

There is nothing wrong with using different flooring types in any of the spaces in your home. Doing this can help with your creativity and the color scheme you want. For example, you can create a color scheme that will tie into the area rugs or patterns on the walls. This can give you more ways to mix and match as you choose your decor and furniture. F
