Mauvein, also known as aniline violet and Perkin mauve, was one of the first synthetic dyes. It was accidentally discovered by William Henry Perkin in 1856 while trying to synthesize the phytochemical quinine to cure malaria. It is also among the first mass-produced chemical dyes.
