Painting the exterior of your house is best done in the fall or spring here in Georgia when temperatures are moderate, and the weather isn’t too hot or too cold.

Temperature

The best temperature range for painting outdoors with latex paint is from 50° to 85° F. The high temperature during the day should be at least 5 degrees higher than the expected nighttime temperature. Latex paints dry very quickly in hot weather and if it’s too hot, the paint will dry before it can level out and might develop a rough texture. Paint that dries too fast won’t allow enough time for brush marks to smooth out, which means you’ll have to re-apply more paint to get rid of them. Also, because latex dries so quickly in the heat, it doesn’t have much time to release bubbles that might be trapped inside. This can result in a bumpy finish.

You may have heard that water-based paints dry faster and stick better in cool weather, but with latex paint, that’s only true down to about 50°F. When temperatures drop below 50°F, latex paint becomes extremely thick and hard to apply smoothly (this is a common problem when painting interior walls in winter).

The best temperature for painting outside is between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s generally best to avoid painting when the temperature is extremely hot, like in the 90s, or freezing cold, like in the low 40s. In those conditions, it can take longer for the paint to dry which can result in a smoother finish.

Warm Days are Better

In order for your paint job to turn out perfectly, the weather needs to cooperate. This is because how the paint dries is directly related to the temperature and conditions at the time of application.

Ideally, you want to choose a time that gives you warm, dry days. It’s also a good idea to look at the weather for the few days before and after your painting day. If it rains before you paint, your siding might need a couple of days to fully dry out before painting. The same goes for after the application—you want to make sure it’s not going to pour rain the day after when your paint is still curing.

You also want to be careful of big temperature fluctuations from day tonight. If you’ve got perfect temperatures during the day, but then a sudden drop after the sun goes down.
